The Wayfarer Redemption

Definitely my newest favorite fantasy book outside of the Golden Compass, Harry Potter, and LOTR...those are my top three untouchables.
Anyway- this story was amazing, and it is a series which I LOVE. It's got some romance, but mostly just really awesome characters and a story line that did not completely imitate Tolkien in terms of the fantasy world.
LOVE IT. Definitely going to read it again many times...

endpost.

When I was taking my Tolkien class last semester, we had a good talk about what it means to be derivative in a genera like fantasy where that whole classification of writing sprang, really, from one series of books (LOTR). Me, I think that copy-catery does exist, but it really comes down to the similar experiences of the human condition. We write about similar things because we have experienced similar things. In the case of fantasy, people identify with certain archetypes (elves, goblins) but the stories are new because the archetypes mean different things to the individual writer.
